What is a satellite website?

Have you noticed that an increasing number of charities are commissioning secondary sites alongside their main website? This trend reflects a growing understanding of how satellite sites can supplement and promote an organisation’s core activities.

Most often these stand-alone ‘satellite sites’ promote and support specific services. The sites are usually commissioned independently or in collaboration with other charities or external organisations.

Satellite Sites to Promote Services

A recent service-focused example is With Youth. This is a standalone website which serves as an open access hub . It provides online support to children and young people experiencing mental ill health and/or emotional distress. With Youth was commissioned by Hertfordshire Mind Network in partnership with BfB Labs. This innovative online service can deliver valuable CYP services county-wide.

Income Generating Satellite Sites

Increasingly, we are being asked to create revenue focused or e-commerce satellite sites. An excellent example is the Well at Work website which was commissioned by Hammersmith, Fulham, Ealing and Hounslow Mind (HFEH Mind)

Well at Work aims to help raise awareness of mental health in the workplace. It offers a wide range of Mental Health training courses and consultancy which can be booked through the website. Operated as a social enterprise, Well at Work donates 100% of all profits directly to HFEH Mind.

This is one of several satellite sites we have created to help local Minds generate revenue. Example income streams include mental health training, room booking, event ticketing etc.

Independently Branded Websites

These standalone sites have with their own distinctive branding, but affiliation to their respective local Mind charities remains clear. The satellite sites can be accessed directly or via the main website. Having their own unique domain name makes the sites search engine friendly and easier for visitors to find.
